Cortez Biography:

Cortez Curtis, is a contemporary artist, based in Chicago. Cortez has been part of the Chicago art community since 2003.

Cortez  attended college at Wilberforce University in Ohio were he studied art and majored in Political Science. Cortez enrolled at William L. Dawson college. He studied drafting and upon graduating Cortez found success early in his career as an electrical draftsman, designer and Assistant electrical engineer, Associate electrical engineer and Project engineer in charge of Substation installation.  Cortez graduated from Benedictine University with a degree in Business Management. He also studied art at The Collage of Du Page in IL. In the early 2000’s Cortez decided to make the move to retire. As his artwork matured he began to think that his true purpose all along was to be an artist. He started a new art business where he distinguished himself as a widely acclaimed artist.

 

Since 2010 he has increased his art production and started entering local exhibitions in the Chicagoland area.  Cortez’s early works were inspired by his life experiences. As his work evolved, however his artistic style began to combine more abstract and cubism to create his extremly colors and strikingly beautiful paintings style of todays works.

The artist evolved, he began to combine images with thought concepts. His latest series, “Nature” is intended to inspire and promote better living self-talk. Cortez’s favorite department in any bookstore was always the self-help and self- empowerment section. He continued interest in that subject combined with his interest in metaphysical principles is a major influence in his current work. “I want to create images that make you smile from the depths of your heart.” after you view his artwork you will understand why.

Cortez Curtis is not your typical artist. He’s been defying categorization for over 20 years with his genre-bending artwork that blends abstract, contemporary,  jazz, spiritual, and landscape art into a unique colorful tapestry. Led by his creativity Cortez has generated an indelible legacy of critically acclaimed masterpieces, solo-shows, and unforgettable exhibitions at museums and galleries. His art is a celebration of life, love, and human connection that transcends boundaries and brings people together. Cortez took a major step in his career when in 2006 he entered two painting at the Museum of Science and Industry and they were selected and, featured in the Black creativity Juried Art Exhibition. He was honored with the Exceptional Ability and Outstanding Recognition award for his artwork. Cortez’s art has been sold locally and internationally and has been included in several major juried art exhibitions including Solo showings:
