Artist Statement, The Art of Cortez Curtis
When I paint, I try to envision and express the principle properties inherent in every subject. My series on healthy living focuses on healing the body and mind. Having a room with colorful art reduces stress. My series on “Nature” explores landscapes and animals every day life and the beauty it holds. In addition to my “Jazz” series that depicts musicians, I have a “Spiritual” series of paintings that are my favorites they demonstrate through their many Bible stories that the Life Principle inherent in every piece recognize and inspires an individuals natural state of wholeness.
My painting technique has evolved over the last 20 years to include airbrush, mixed medium oil’s and acrylic. My style is one of a self-taught artist who studied classes in high school and college and I’m still learning. I succeeded in the world of art mainly because of my ability to see things different and apply my own unique style and interpretation of the world as I see it..
To truly appreciate my artwork you need to see it in-person by visiting one of my art showings or by visit my workshop. However in the new environment most people can’t or won’t visit galleries. I started this painting as an art project for an art class I was taking, is from my Spiritual series and Bible Stories “The Blood Of Chris” is a oil and acrylic painting on canvas 36×48 inches. It’s from the movies with the same name. It has been exhibited at museums as well as art shows.
This 36×36 inch Oil Painting is also from my Spiritual Series “Danial N The Lions Den.” This story has a personal meaning relating to my faith in God to protect me no matter what or where I find myself
“The Last Supper” is also from my Biblical series show Jesus and his twelve Disciples having supper together for the last time. In this mix media 36×48 inch painting on canvas I wanted to show the power of the moment.
“Moses” Parting the Red Sea is also part of the Spiritual Series. This 36×36 inch Mix Media painting on canvas was created to show the power of the Lord to work miracles. And how he uses us to bring them to life. Here I focused on the waves I wanted to show the power of movement.
“Adam And Eve And The Apple.” also part of the Biblical Series is a abstract Mix Media 24×24 inch painting on canvas. I focus on the apple because it changed everything with one bite.
Finally we have “The Color Of Christ” this 16×20 inch acrylic painting on canvas tell the story of Jesus in abstract colors. He made no distinction of gender, race, class, or religious persuasion. He taught that every man was free to be what he wanted to be.
